Pancha maha bhutus or the five-element theory is the basis of Ayurvedic knowledge. The science of the five elements represents the way in which the ancient rishis understood the world around them. To the rishis, everything in nature is made up of a combination of the five elements. The five elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether.
The five elements are more than the tangible elements themselves. They are representations of ideas. They are poetic, symbolic metaphors that help us to understand the building block of all creation. Over the next few days I will be explaining the five elements further!
