When things are frequently ingested that are heavy, filled with toxins and difficult to digest, even a healthy digestive fire (agni) can become overwhelmed, and ama (toxins) results. An overwhelmed digestive fire may send you signals, particularly after you eat. Symptoms such as gas, bloating, belching, heartburn, drowsiness and nausea are all signs that ama could be present. So the key is to clear the ama so that the agni can be restored to a healthy state.
For those of you cleansing with me next week it is crucial that you eliminate meats, refined sugars, and processed foods from your diet. This is the next step in Purvakarma and is more than necessary to start this week. What I want you to do is focus on eating whole grains, cooked vegetables, beans and nuts. Limit dairy but some soft cheeses and yogurt are ok. You want to avoid any really drying foods (crackers, chips, hard cheeses.)
Consume fresh and organic foods! When we eat fresh foods, which are naturally sweet, while blending all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent), our bodies get deeply nourished, our intellects grow sharper and our memories improve. Natural foods, prepared from fresh ingredients, are easy to digest and amplify the sattvic quality of the mind. When sattva dominates, it’s simple to live in a way that supports health.
